On Fox, Mark Sanford Repeats Paranoid ATF Gun-Control Conspiracy
Appearing on the May 10 edition of Fox News' America's Newsroom, former South Carolina Governor and current Fox News Contributor Mark Sanford became the latest media figure to push the bogus conspiracy theory that the botched Fast and Furious operation was actually a nefarious plot against the Second Amendment. Fast and Furious was a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) investigation into illegal guns diverted from the United States to drug cartels in Mexico that took place between 2009 and 2011. It employed the controversial tactic of allowing guns to be trafficked into Mexico with the hope that ...read the full article

Man sold nearly 50 guns on Chicago streets, federal charges say
A South Side felon has been charged in a federal complaint for peddling nearly 50 guns onto Chicago's streets in less than two weeks. Levaine Tanksley is accused of selling 47 guns, many of them semi-automatic pistols, to a confidential informant, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday. Tanksley was convicted in Cook County in 2006 of felony drug charges, making it illegal for him to possess the weapons, the complaint said. Tanksley allegedly met the informant at various locations around the city, including at his home in the Park Manor neighborhood and a parking lot in Chinatown. The sales happened between April 22 ...read the full article

Hard to believe, but guns are legal in schools
People I've talked to are shocked to find out there's no law against people bringing concealed, loaded handguns onto school campuses if they have a concealed handgun license in Oregon. Most schools have policies prohibiting guns on school property, but a recent Oregon Court of Appeals ruling has raised questions about their enforceability -- and because most laws relating to guns must be approved by the Oregon Legislature and not by municipalities or other units of local government, those school policies prohibiting guns might not be binding. It is time for the state Legislature to address the issue. Incidents have happened. This ...read the full article

When Are Light Bulbs More Dangerous Than Guns?
Gunwise, the Republican National Convention in Tampa presents the party with some knotty issues. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has designated the August convention a "National Special Security Event." Guns will be prohibited inside the convention hall and in a safety perimeter around it. So the Republicans' own convention will not be able to showcase one of their favorite principles: that the presence of concealed guns "enhances public safety," as Representative Lamar Smith of Texas said recently. Many Republicans in Congress, like many of their colleagues in state legislatures, support legislation that would effectively legalize the carrying of concealed firearms ...read the full article

Critics say Va.’s gun laws could encourage trafficking
Open season for gun enthusiasts in Virginia begins July 1, as state residents will be allowed to purchase more than one handgun per month for the first time since 1993. The General Assembly voted to repeal its 19-year-old restriction on gun sales that stemmed from Virginia's days as a key cog in the "iron pipeline," when about 40 percent of guns traced from New York City crimes originated in Virginia. The one-handgun-per-month limit accomplished its goal of reducing the number of Virginia guns used to commit crimes in other states, according to a 1995 report by the Virginia State Crime Commission, but ...read the full article

Virginians less optimistic about McDonnell, direction of state, Post poll finds
McDonnell, once among the most conservative voices in the legislature, has surprised his critics by working on kitchen-table issues such as jobs, schools and roads. He helped cut $4 billion from the state budget, paring spending to 2006 levels and not raising taxes. Jose Moralo, an independent voter from Hampton, said he has been pleasantly surprised by McDonnell's governing style. "I think he's done all right," said Moralo, 51, who works in a youth ministry. "I think that he hasn't been as extremist as I thought he was going to be." But Republicans took control of both chambers of the General Assembly in ...read the full article

House Republicans try to block Obama's rifle rule
House Republicans, accusing President Barack Obama of waging a war on gun owners, plan to cut off funding for an rule requiring firearms dealers in border states to report multiple sales of certain rifles. The matter has become a flash point on both sides of the national gun control divide, elevating the debate over the Second Amendment in an election year in which the president is struggling to win again in pro-gun swing states such as New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada and Virginia. Obama has vowed to veto the House's plan to prohibit the government from enforcing the border-state reporting requirement, which is ...read the full article

Harris-Perry: Let them bring their guns
On Tuesday, Florida Governor Rick Scott shot down a request by Tampa Florida 's Democratic mayor, Bob Buckhorn . Now, just what was the mayor asking for, an executive order to ban guns outside of Tampa 's Republican convention in August in order to better protect police and citizens. The nerve of him, right? Who is the heck is the mayor Buckhorn to say people can't carry concealed weapons . I say let them carry guns to their convention . What? You didn't think I would say that? I mean, it's not like 100,000 people in America are shot in ...read the full article

Florida, standing its ground, will allow guns at the Republican convention
File this under the rubric Only in America - sticks, poles and water guns will be banned from the centre of Tampa at the Republican Party's national convention next August. Guns, however, will be allowed. The logic behind that is drawn from the U.S. constitution. How so? The constitution's second amendment protects the right of citizens to "keep and bear arms" and that is taken to mean firearms. Sticks, poles and water guns do not enjoy constitutional protection. That, in a nutshell, is the argument the governor of Florida, Rick Scott, used to turn down a request by the mayor ...read the full article

Four guilty of first-degree murder in 2010 shootings; fifth convicted on lesser charges
Five District men were convicted of murder Monday for their roles in the deadliest mass shootings in the city in decades, a series of attacks in early 2010 that left five people dead and eight wounded. The verdict came after a two-month trial and more than eight days of deliberations in D.C. Superior Court. The jury foreman's baritone rose and fell as he read more than 200 "guilty" verdicts in the hundreds of charges against the men. Orlando Carter, 22; his brother Sanquan, 21; Jeffrey D. Best, 23; Robert Bost, 23; and Lamar Williams, 23, were convicted of murder and a range ...read the full article
